Margaret Pearse & Company Pilot Project 2018 – Illuminate Herstory Festival!

November 30, 2017 by Kathleen Warner Yeates Leave a Comment

As part of the Illuminate Herstory Festival 2018, Flying Turtle Productions is illuminating the front of the Ireland Institute at 27 Pearse Street and also facilitating two tiers of activity:

1. A fundraiser event for MAM – Mothers artists Makers On January 6th 8:00pm detailed below.

2. An international youth pilot collaboration between Larkin College, Dublin, and their U.S. partners Abington Friends School in Pennsylvania and the Arden Theatre Company, Philadelphia.  Inspired by the festival, each school will be creating a performance piece which focuses on the life a woman who has been forgotten from their local history (see more below).  The pieces are being developed during the autumn 2017 and will be presented in early 2018. This year the Illuminate Herstory festival will take place January 5th-8th, 2018. http://www.herstory.ie/2018/

Margaret Pearse and Hannah Sheehy-Skeffington will Illuminate the front of the Ireland Institute at 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2 for the month of January 2018.

MAM EVENT: January 6th 8:00pm “Nollaig Na MAM – Mothers Artists Makers Fundraiser 2018”
There will be a performance featuring members of MAM (Mothers Artists Makers) who will be performing a theatre review of various pieces. This is a ticketed event for €10 and ALL proceeds go directly to MAM. Special thanks to the Ireland Institute for allowing use of the theatre. Full reservation and performance details are available through the eventbrite booking link here:  https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/nollaig-na-mam-mothers-artist-makers-fund-raiser-2018-tickets-41383408890?utm_term=eventurl_text

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH PERFORMANCE PROJECT
Under the coordination of Kathleen Warner Yeates company, Flying Turtle Productions, we will facilitate simultaneous performance productions in Dublin and the U.S. which will be created by secondary school students. In Dublin, it will be Larkin College as facilitated by Michelle Fallon, creating a piece around Dr. Kathleen Lynn, an Irish politician, activist and the first female Irish medical doctor.

In the U.S. the Abington Friends School under the direction of Megan Bellwoar Hollinger, will create a performance about Lydia Darragh, an 18th century Irish-Quaker from Philadelphia who was credited with spying on behalf of the George Washington lead war of independence. The U.S. production will culminate in a performed reading in collaboration with the Arden Theatre Company, Philadelphia.

The two secondary schools will be creating a performance based on the life of their chosen women, and will be exchanging videos of their progress with each other. Final performances in early 2018.

Dr. Kathleen Lynn, Irish political activist and first female Irish medical doctor.

Lydia Darragh, an 18th century Irish-Quaker who settled in Philadelphia just before the American Revolution, and is credited with spying for George Washington’s troops.

Last year for the Illuminate Herstory Festival 2017, Flying Turtle Productions explored a site-specific performance piece entitled “Margaret Pearse & Company” and delivered a workshop production during the festival in January 2017.  We hope to have a more fully realized production of this piece for 2019, however, for this year we have chosen to explore the youth drama collaborating partners for the festival.

LATEST UPDATES FROM  THE YOUTH PROJECT:

Larkin College, Dublin and Abington Friends, PA, U.S.A.  have both been developing their performance pieces about their chosen women.

They have sent “hello” videos to each other as a way of introducing their subjects. Both groups are evolving original performance pieces that are currently in progress and we will have updates here this week!
