INTERNATIONAL YOUTH PERFORMANCE PROJECT
Under the coordination of Kathleen Warner Yeates company, Flying Turtle Productions, we will facilitate simultaneous performance productions in Dublin and the U.S. which will be created by secondary school students. In Dublin, it will be Larkin College as facilitated by Michelle Fallon, creating a piece around Dr. Kathleen Lynn, an Irish politician, activist and the first female Irish medical doctor.
In the U.S. the Abington Friends School under the direction of Megan Bellwoar Hollinger, will create a performance about Lydia Darragh, an 18th century Irish-Quaker from Philadelphia who was credited with spying on behalf of the George Washington lead war of independence. The U.S. production will culminate in a performed reading in collaboration with the Arden Theatre Company, Philadelphia.
The two secondary schools will be creating a performance based on the life of their chosen women, and will be exchanging videos of their progress with each other. Final performances in early 2018.
Last year for the Illuminate Herstory Festival 2017, Flying Turtle Productions explored a site-specific performance piece entitled “Margaret Pearse & Company” and delivered a workshop production during the festival in January 2017. We hope to have a more fully realized production of this piece for 2019, however, for this year we have chosen to explore the youth drama collaborating partners for the festival.
LATEST UPDATES FROM THE YOUTH PROJECT:
Larkin College, Dublin and Abington Friends, PA, U.S.A. have both been developing their performance pieces about their chosen women.
They have sent “hello” videos to each other as a way of introducing their subjects. Both groups are evolving original performance pieces that are currently in progress and we will have updates here this week!
